Belper Health Hub

SFS delivered structural steel fire protection and firestopping works at Belper Health Hub, including design consultation and fire protective board installation.

Firestopping
Structural Fire Protection

Project overview

We worked with a new-build health clinic requiring compliant structural fire protection and firestopping works. The project required a design change to ensure full compartmentation performance and was delivered using a pre-agreed project pack and digital QA recording.

The Challenge

Structural Fireproofing Systems Ltd (SFS) identified a non-compliant specification at design stage, which meant an alternative had to be agreed and implemented before structural fire protection works could begin.

  • The original design specified intumescent paint to structural steelwork.
  • During review, it was identified that intumescent paint could not achieve the required insulation performance where steelwork passed above compartment walls.
  • A compliant alternative was required to maintain compartmentation integrity and meet the fire strategy.
  • Firestopping works needed to be delivered consistently and fully documented across the project.
Our Solution

We revised the specification to a fire protection board solution and put a structured delivery framework in place to ensure every installation was consistent and fully documented from the outset.

  • SFS carried out a technical review during early engagement and identified that a board-based solution was required to achieve both integrity and insulation.
  • The steel protection specification was revised to Promat XW fire protection board, ensuring full compliance with the fire strategy and compartmentation requirements.
  • A full SFS Project Pack was produced prior to works commencing, including approved details, product data, and QA templates.
  • All firestopping installations were completed strictly in accordance with the Project Pack and recorded digitally using PlanRadar, with photographic evidence linked to drawings and locations.
The Results

The project was completed efficiently, with full structural fire protection compliance achieved and a comprehensive documentation provided during handover.

  • Fully compliant structural steel protection solution achieving required integrity and insulation ratings.
  • Compartmentation maintained throughout the building in line with the approved fire strategy.
  • Firestopping works delivered consistently and defect-free.
  • Complete digital QA record and documentation provided, forming part of the project’s Golden Thread of compliance.
