What Makes Fire Stopping & Penetration Sealing Important?

Fire stopping is fundamental to any building’s fire strategy.

When cables, pipes and ducts pass through walls, floors and ceilings, they create potential pathways for fire, heat and smoke to spread. Without properly tested and installed firestopping systems, compartmentation is compromised, endangering occupants, damaging property, and voiding compliance.

At Structural Fireproofing Systems Ltd (SFS), we provide fully tested, third-party certified firestopping solutions designed to restore the fire resistance of penetrated elements and maintain the building’s compartmentation integrity.

Our Cavity Barrier Installation Services

Service Penetration Seals

Tested seals installed around individual services — cables, cable trays, metal and plastic pipes, and ductwork — where they pass through fire-rated walls and floors. Systems include intumescent sealants, collars, wraps, and putty pads, selected to suit the service type, substrate, and required fire-resistance period (up to 240 minutes).

Applications:

  • Cables and cable trays passing through compartment walls and floors
  • Plastic pipes (SVPs, waste, conduit) requiring intumescent collars or wraps
  • Metal pipework and insulated services
  • Electrical back boxes within fire-rated partitions

Supply Partners: Quelfire, FSI, Hilti, Nullifire

Linear Joint

Fire-rated sealing of linear gaps and movement joints between building elements — head-of-wall details, wall-to-wall junctions, and floor edge joints. Systems accommodate structural movement while maintaining the fire and smoke resistance of the compartment line, with acoustic sealing available where required.

Applications:

  • Head-of-wall and deflection head details
  • Junctions between compartment walls and soffits, slabs, or façades
  • Expansion and movement joints in walls and floors

Supply Partners: FSI, Nullifire, Rockwool

Compound Penetrations

Larger or mixed-service openings sealed using ablative coated batt and compound systems, restoring the full fire resistance of the wall or floor. Each seal is designed against current test evidence, with service spacing and seal dimensions verified for compliance — and every installation labelled, photographed, and recorded for the Golden Thread.

Applications:

  • Mixed-service openings (cables, pipes, and ducts through a single aperture)
  • Builders’ work openings in compartment walls and floors
  • High-density service routes in plant rooms and corridors

Supply Partners: FSI, Rockwool, Kingspan, Hilti

Riser & Shaft Sealing

Fire-rated sealing of vertical risers and service shafts at each floor level to prevent fire and smoke spreading between storeys. Load-rated batt and compound systems are installed around riser services, providing certified compartment floors within the shaft — fully labelled and documented for ongoing maintenance access.

Applications:

  • Vertical service risers in residential, healthcare, and commercial buildings
  • SVP and mechanical shafts requiring floor-level compartmentation
  • Re-sealing of risers following service alterations or remedial surveys

Supply Partners: FSI, Rockwool, Hilti, Quelfire
